ANGHIARI - The Castles
Pianettole
The expansion of the Camaldolesi. Maintained in a sufficient state of conservation, Pianettole is a good exemplary of a medieval fort, with a high beltline in stone and a defense tower for the main entrance with a west side access.
The tower is still divided by a wooden loft connected by stairs, with a fireplace on the ground floor. Even the story of Pianettole is tied somewhat to the presence of the Camaldolesi in Valtiberina.
The continuous donations of parishes and churches (subjected to various castles of the area) in favor of the order made it so the Camaldolesi could penetrate domineeringly among the Diocese of Arezzo and the city of Castello, until the Bishop at the time didn't invoke the intervention of the Emperor Federico of Svevia to defend his possessions.
In 1502 Sansepelcro lived subduaby bexause of Piero dei Medici, the territory of Anghiari and Parish Santo Stefano. The citizens quickly profitted to bring down the Castel of Ahghiari, destroying the Castle of Pianettole at the same time.
