PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA
Battle between Heraclius and Chosroes
c. 1460 - Fresco, 329 x 747 cm - San Francesco, Arezzo
Heraclius, the Emperor of the East, wage war to Chosroe, the Persian King and after defeating him returned to Jerusalem with the Holy Wood. Because of God's will, however, the Emperor could not make his triumphal entrance in town. Heraclius abandoned all the signs of his power and magnificence and entered in Jerusalem carrying the Cross in sign of humility, following Christ's example.
The figure of the trumpet player amongst the fighters, on the left, should be noted for its artistic value.
