Saint Mary Magdalen

1460 Fresco 190 x 105 cm Duomo, Arezzo
Piero was ordered to paint this important fresco of Saint Mary Magdalen for the Cathedral of Arezzo while he was still working at the final scenes of the cycle of Saint Francis. Mary Magdalen's figure is magnificent, with large areas painted in bright colours, which remind of the XVI century Venetian painters. Piero was concentrated on this use of colours, but at the same time he put great care in painting details, as he did later, in his more mature works. This can be seen in the reflections on the small bottle and on the Saint's hair, painted one by one on her stable shoulders.
The fresco is in the Cathedral, next to the sacresty door.
