ANGHIARI - Main Monuments

The doors and other works of defense
Together with the ancient protective outer wall, the clock tower, named The Bell, is an emerging element of the Anghiarian urban landscape.
Builtin the thirteenth century and finished in 1323 it was destroyed by Vitellozzo Vitelli in 1502.
It was rebuilt a century later and on this occasion a clock was installed.
In the first half of the eight hundreds it was restored to what you see it as now.
The bell positioned in the tower shows written gothic letters which confirms its possession by the Castle of Montauto.

The Rocca or Convent
This majestic complex constituted the nucleus strength around the developement of Anghiari and the rural subdivisions of the Cascine.
The Rocca was at least three meters higher and sustained by buttresses which were torn down in 1935 so as to build a road.
The protective outer wall was embattled throughout the centuries and the place of defense and monestary Camaldolese.
In the First World War it was used to harbour soldiers, until it became common property.
In 1978 it was reconstructed as a middle school.

The Door of Sant'Angelo and the Door Bar of Anghiari
The door of Sant'Angelo in ancient times reppresented the main access to the town up until, with the brief domaign of the Tarlati's of Pietramala begun in 1332, the Borgo alla Croce was built which inverted the access and therefore the orientation of the developement of the town.

New Door or Old Door
Other ancient doors that consented entrance to the town.

New Door or Florentine
Built in 1460 as a bullwark towards the plain.
It was built with the stone of the destroyed Castle of Vaglialle and was protected by a drawbridge.

Old Door or San Martino
It is situated on an elevated short stretch of road beyond the moat leading into the Piazza del Mercatale, now Piazza Baldaccio.
Above the door you can see the place where the bell of Mercatale hangs, which rang at the opening and closing of the Market.
