Thomas Beckett and the Church of San Agostino.
The origins of the church are tied to Thomas Beckett (1115 - 1170) and his passing of Anghiari.
The Chancellor of England's King Henry, and Archbishop of Cantebury, the cathedral where he was assasinated.
In 1164 Beckett obtained, from Rolando di Montedoglio, Abbot di San Bartolomeo, the coals of the castle which were found outside the walls of the Castle, where his escort, the medics of Saint Anthony Abate, built cells and an oratory dedicated to the Saint In 1188 the community passed to the laws of Saint Agostino and a short time after, above the oratory, a church was built dedicated to the Saint.
Following the collapse of the bell tower, the church was enlarged in 1464. In 1748 the fourth century apse was restored.
