Red earthen clay in Valtiberina
Its creation: July, 1973
Objective: The game of tennis for all levels. In the 1960's the game began to become popular even in the Valtebrina. Italian tennis greats like Pietrangeli, or the young and rising Panatta and the Davis Cup all contributed to the growing popularity of the sport, made possible as well thanks to numerous tournaments broadcasted live through television by voices of sportscasters Guido Oddo and Giampiero Galeazzi.
A game of the elite, tennis transformed into a sport for everyone and racquets were soon bought by all to play the game a couple of hours a week.
The Tennis Club of Anghiari was created at the peak of this new popularity. At the beginning a sole clay court was constructed and illumination followed in 1976. Shortly after in 1979 the grounds were enriched by another court, this time in synthetic green also equipped with artificial lighting and locker rooms were also added.
These upgrades however, were not accompanied with an adeguate sports program including competitions for the younger player, intended to entice and to create a continuous flow of new members. The courts were always full but by locals who were little willing to give space, not only physically but also considerately.
A school of tennis, including all competences necessary, were lacking to create and make grow a real tennis tradition even though in 1983 the Club achieved its first official honor due to the passion of young 20 year olds at the time with the admission into the final phase of team championships " Cup of the Towers" ("Coppa delle Torri").
It was in1985 that an organizational era began, fertil with national summer tournaments and the creation of the Alta Valle of the Tevere Tennis Circuit, today called "delle Vallate Aretine".
In 1987 a number of participants were included to what was called the "Anghiari Open", a tournament ahead of its time and yet to be beaten; 164 players both men and women coming from all over the province and surrounding regions. In that same year the Tennis Club added a new building with new dressing areas, a lounge, bar area and sun terrace.
The althletic notoriety of the Tennis Club reached noteble peaks, regardless of the fact of having only 2 courts, and competitions in Anghiari earned an enormous and qualified flow of participants.
At the same time, a decline of popularity in tennis on a national level in the 1990's, provoked a wave which generated a decrease of players in all small circles of the province. This hint of crisis became defined in time.
Ideas were lacking on a national level. The boom years had dilapidated by lack of programming for the future. Consequently, resources became more latent. Activating a motor of development able to invert tendencies in favor of the game, became almost alien. But in its own little particular world the Tennis Club however, knew how to make its decisive move in 1997, converting the old cement court into a poli-game structure in synthetic green for both Soccer and Tennis.
The rest is history. Tennis is, and remains a fashionable game, intensivley fun. As the French love to say:" Tennis is a game for life". Try it to believe it.
