ANGHIARI - The Castles
Toppole
The castrum of the Longobardi's. Even the Castle of Toppole was part of the fortification system of defense on the right side of the Valley of Sovara. The first documents attest the comittment assumed by Enrico di Barnabò of the Longobardi's of Galbino to defend Toppole, functioning as the Abbey of Santa Flora of Arezzo, meanwhile in 1142 the castle and its court were donated to the Monks of Camaldoli together with parts of the castles Pianettole e Valialle.
With concession by Anghiari to Ranieri of Galbino, Toppole found its fate as a village of the High Valley at the same time as it finished first under the dominion of Guido Tarlati and then later the Florentines.
In the center of Toppole is the Church of San Clemente. Already existing in the first half of the 12th century, some tombs recently discovered makes one believe that its past precedes beyond this time. The apse represents the oldest part of the church, originating with a Greek cross plan.
The transformation to the Latin cross goes back instead to the middle of 1800.At a short distance from Toppole you can reach on foot, the Badia San Veriano, with important Roman Parishes.
